For the Labor Day wk.end we flew into Charlottesville, Virginia for the BYU vs. VA. game. We also enjoyed some of the historical sites and the beauty of this state where many of Donna’s relatives have lived, inc. her Great Grandfather Henry M. Wampler who was a part of the 35th Virginia Cavalry.
Our first stop on Friday was to Pres. Thomas Jefferson’s home- Monticello!
We took a Behind the Scenes Tour of his home and was amazed at the great inventions he came up with for a man of his time.
Next the home of James Monore…. just a short distance from the Jefferson Home…
Entering James Monroe's front yard stands a tree over 200 years old and was planted during the time his family lived there!
We really liked his modest home- very quaint and quiet- beautiful country side surrounding it…
He accomplished quite a bit in his lifetime and I think he doesn’t always get the recognition he deserves.. Fun Fact is that Monroe Co. in Key West was named after him :)

On to the ‘Hot’ football game.. it may not look like it but we were sweating profusely and we’re from Florida and there was no shade in sight …….
We were so excited to watch the Cougars play but this had to be the most ‘unique’ game we have ever attended. A thunder storm approached in the 1st qtr. and we had to leave the stadium and stay inside a bldg. close by. After about an hour we were let back in. Finally the game started up again only to have the rain come down in buckets. Steve stayed to watch while I took cover. After all this we lost by 3 points :(

There is so much history to look at- wish we could have stayed longer! Maybe next time…

Monticello looked like a cool place. Too bad we didn't go when we lived closer!
Looks like a fun weekend! We were bummed about the game, too (even though we were safe in our house watching)--they took it off the air when they had to go to the next game, so we didn't get to watch it all. Hopefully this week's will go better! :)
We are hoping to go to DC this October--will have to try and visit these homes. They look beautiful!
